Amanda Olson, the manager of the historic Moonshine Gulch Saloon in Rochford, S.D. tells more about the history of the saloon.
Named after M.D. Rochford, the saloon was established in 1910. Up the road from the saloon is the first cabin of Annie Tallent who was the first pioneer woman to the Black Hills arriving in 1870.
People headed to the Black Hills because of the gold rush. Olson says, “It’s kind of a little piece of wild, wild west that still exists in the Black Hills. And I think people like to see it that way too.
Moonshine Gulch is a great place to grab something to eat and listen to music. Olson explains, “The music is every Sunday, and it’s a local jam and we’ve had a lot of our locals that have been here from way back when. I don’t know exactly times that they’ve started, but we have one guy that plays the harmonica and a guitar, and there’s another guy that they all just kind of feed off one another. If they know the jam, they jam in. If not, they just kind of sit back and watch and wait their turn.”
The Moonshine Gulch is open all winter long with reduced hours. If you are out and about in the Hills, be sure to check out Moonshine Gulch Saloon.
