Mostly Chocolates, a chocolate factory and coffee bar based in Rapid City, is currently celebrating 40 years of business. The shop was established in 1982, and has since grown from serving Black Hills locals to distributing chocolate treats all over the country.
Peggy Porch, owner of Mostly Chocolates, takes great pride in the shop’s locally crafted chocolates.
“We make almost all of our chocolates,” said Porch. “Here, we are a true chocolate factory. I travel quite a bit and wherever I go, I try to visit chocolate shops, and one thing that’s really kind of surprised me is how few of them actually make their own truffles or a lot of their chocolates. But we are different. We do make them here. We are true chocolatiers and most of what you buy here is actually produced right here in Rapid City.”
Mostly Chocolates offers a variety of treats from chocolate covered pretzels to a selection of fudge, but the shop is best known for their house-made truffles.
“Our truffles are special. We are very proud of those,” said Porch.
In addition to their traditional chocolates, Mostly Chocolates carries an entire case of sugar free chocolate options.
“We have a number of customers that love chocolate but aren’t supposed to have sugar, and so they’ve found out that we carry a nice variety for them,” said Porch. “And they’re always really happy to be able to indulge that little chocolate desire and without worrying, worry free.”
Over the past 40 years, Mostly Chocolates has seen many changes and immense growth. Some of that growth is owed to the addition of a full coffee bar to the shop, which features an exclusive blend made especially for Mostly Chocolates.
“We get our coffee from Dark Canyon Coffee here in Rapid City, a fantastic coffee supplier, and they make some of the best. One of the things they make for us is our own special blend. It’s called the Mostly Chocolates Blend. It’s got a caramel and a chocolate and a hazelnut flavoring to it. The only place in the world you can buy it is right here,” said Porch.
The coffee bar also offers espresso drinks, such as lattes and cappuccinos, as well as freshly blended smoothies. Any item from Mostly Chocolates’ treats and drinks can be ordered through their drive-thru, which is open at 7 every morning.
Mostly Chocolates is a local hotspot for unique gifts, as the shop offers various gift baskets and specialty items around the holidays. Not to mention, free chocolate samples are always available at the shop.
“We always have samples out,” said Porch. “You know, we’ve discovered that once people try things, they’re like, ‘oh, yummy. Oh, I need that.'”
As if chocolate and coffee were not enough, Mostly Chocolate also carries a selection of Three Queens Honey products.
“It’s a local company that’s out of New Underwood, and it’s a family business,” said Porch. “It’s a mom and her daughters, and they they make fantastic honey.”
Mostly Chocolates’ summer specialty is their chocolate covered strawberry selection, available in dark, milk and white chocolate.
