Muley Hill Lodge, an event center in Deadwood, also caters to families

Just outside of Deadwood is the Muley Hill Lodge, an event center featuring the renovated 1911 Deadwood Dairy Barn. In addition to being an events center, Muley Hill Lodge also has trail rides, wagon rides, fishing, and a homestead supper throughout the day.

Pam Brewer, Co-Owner, explains how Muley Hill Lodge was created.

“So we bought the house and then we [began] fixing up the barn. And our children decided that maybe we should make it into an event center. And one of our children was engaged at the time. And so that’s how it happened. And we decided to have a wedding event center for of everybody instead of just our kids.”

In addition to being a wedding venue, Muley Hill Lodge offers activities for the general public. 

“Every Sunday through Thursday, the general public can come here and they can go fishing, horseback riding, wagon rides. We have a petting zoo and in the evenings they can have a homestead supper. And then Marlin Maynard is here to entertain them in the evenings on Sunday through Wednesday.”

It was important to create a place where families coming to Deadwood could have activities to do.

Brewer explains, “We just noticed a lot of people coming to Deadwood that have have families with them nowadays instead of how it used to be. They were just adults would come. And so we just felt that having the families come out here would give them something to do during the day before they would take part of some of the activities in town.”

At Muley Hill Lodge, you can pay for the activities that you want. You can purchase a wristband for the activities that you would like to participate in doing.

One activity at Muley Hill Lodge is the trail rides. Jill Weber, Founder of Shiloh Horse Rescue, talks about how Muley Hill Lodge helps to fund this project.

“We started the first rescue in 2003, and we’re mainly an end of life facility for old and special needs horses. And they come and they live out their days with us. And we rescued over 700 horses and we’ve put about 450, almost 500 into new homes. And we started doing the trail programs to help support the horses in the rescue. So it’s kind of a neat thing. Everything here at Muley Hill helps to fund the rescue. Yeah, the petting zoo, they’re all rescue animals. The homestead supper that helps to fund the animals. It’s about an hour experience. So we take you out. We go out onto these hayfields. The trail itself is about 45 minutes, but we also give a little history talk of Muley Hill and Deadwood. And you can also interact with the horses a little bit more than maybe you can at other places.”

If you are interested in fishing, Troy Schultes, Owner of Ponderosa Dam, tells more about this activity at Muley Hill Lodge.

“It’s kind of been a little bit a dream of mine to have a place like this. I bought the property four years ago. Back there was nothing here then. Of course, I made it bigger. And then we brought in fish and tried to make it a little place for tourists and kids and families to hang out and have a good time. Being part of the Muley Hill Lodge and we’re kind of a partner together to try to make a bigger place for more events, more things to do.”

Schultes also says that there is camping and boating available. The dam is also stocked with different species of fish including rainbow trout, bass, crappie, bluegill and perch. There is plenty to do at Muley Hill Lodge.
