RAPID CITY, S.D. — This is the third year Monument Health is sponsoring a local artist to design art to raise awareness and support to breast cancer patients and families.
Radke’s submission was selected in a Facebook-like campaign.
Visitors are invited to snap a pic by the mural, and put it on social media with the hashtag #breastcancerstrong.
Madison Radke, artist, says in reference to the meaning of her mural,
“Butterfly’s represent life, transformation, changing and I thought that was what people were going through when they go through breast cancer. So I put faith, hope and love around it because I think that is what people need when they are battling cancer.”
Radke says this is the first mural she has made for the community but has made several for herself and friends. This public mural took about 12 days and around 30 hours to complete.
She plans on purchasing more art supplies or start a clothing business with her winnings of $500 from being selected as contest winner.
“It’s overall like a great experience, I’ve had so many people come through here and ask me, like, what it’s for and what it means and I explain it to them and it’s just very touching,” Radke said.
The mural is 10 feet tall by 14 feet wide. Cancer survivors are welcome to sign their name next to the mural.
