Northern Hills Polar Plunge using new location to create excitement for event

DEADWOOD, S.D. — Those who’ve enjoyed the Northern Hills Polar Plunge in Spearfish in the past did so in a different place this year.

For the first time, volunteers traveled to Deadwood this year where they leapt into a cold pool at Outlaw Square.

Although it happened in a different location, the goal of raising money for Special Olympics athletes in South Dakota was the same.

The purpose of the new location was to get the public and plungers more involved and get the attendance numbers warmed up for future plunges.

“It’s new, it’s right on Main Street in Deadwood and what we are anticipating is these new locations to reinvigorate and re energize plungers and people to participate,” said Jim Smit, the Event Coordinator.

A total of 35 pre-registered divers participated in the plunge.
