Off-road vehicle riders practice safety while strolling through trails

PIEDMONT, S.D. — Off-road vehicle season is revving up, with warmer temperatures bringing riders outside.

“This is probably the perfect day, that’s why we’re out here,” said Glen Tryon, of Rapid City.

But with the increase in temps and little to no precipitation, riders need to remain more diligent and plan for emergencies when out on the trails.

“We usually take a snack with us, we usually take some water with us,” Tryon said. “We do have a fire extinguisher.”

The upkeep of off-road vehicles is crucial. A vehicle shouldn’t have any fuel or oil leaks.

Riders should wear a helmet and also check the exhaust for debris. That can do more than cause harm to your machine.

Tell a friend or loved one where you’re going and during a dry time of year like this one, riders should say to stay on the trails.

“If you go riding off-trail, you can get grass, branches, leaves up inside your ATV and then there’s possibility for a fire,” Tryon said. “Alone, damage and property.”
