RAPID CITY, S.D. — It is year 13 for South Dakota School of Mines and Technology’s annual Pumpkin Chunkin’ contest.
Every year students come together to showcase their engineering skills by building or remodeling trebuchets and slinging pumpkins across the field putting their ingenuity to the test. The event usually takes place in Memorial Park for the public to witness, but due to the pandemic, this year it was moved to the University’s campus where only those participating could attend.
Six teams took part in the fierce competition as judges from the school’s Center of Excellence for Advanced Manufacturing and Production rated each toss.
“Every year we have new, different trebuchets that seem to launch further and further and you know can’t wait to see what they bring out next year,” says Associate Director of SDSMT’s CAMP Kimberly Osberg.
With a score of 808, the Baja team took home the win. The University hopes to go back to the park in 2021.
