One Sturgis art studio is fighting cancer with photography

STURGIS, S.D. — From bikes to bagpipes, the 80th Sturgis Motorcycle Rally has come to a close, but local businesses still have work to do.

One vendor in Sturgis offers a special opportunity for kids fighting cancer. White Canvas Arts owner, Dustin White’s five-year-old son is a cancer survivor, and realizes the strain it puts on families, and wanted give children something special, so he is fighting cancer with photography.

Through donations, patrons can help give deserving kids a day in the spotlight. Kids and families will head to the studio for a special one-on-one superhero photoshoot. During the shoot, the studio will provide multiples events for the family, and will conclude with a personalized comic book for the kids.

“They’ll be able to not only see themselves as a superhero, but they’ll actually get that present from us, to actually showcase that, because kids with cancer are always called superheroes because they’re fighting a whole lot and they do it so well,” White said. “And we just want to show them that they are superheroes.”

The studio is asking patrons to donate at least $10 to help raise the spirits of kids in need. As for being open during the Rally, White has been mostly operating online, but made arrangements for his family to stay in North Dakota during the Rally to keep his son safe.

To provide a safe environment, White intends to do a thorough cleaning and close the shop for two weeks.
