STURGIS, S.D. — The Sturgis City Council has approved a measure that will allow open containers during the Sturgis Rally.
On Monday, the council voted seven-to-two to allow open containers, but there are some provisions to the measure.
They are:
- Open containers will only be allowed in the downtown entertainment area.
- Participants must use an official event cup
- Participants must have a wristband that shows they’re 21 or older.
The measure will allow open containers during the rally from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.
The proceeds from official cup sales will raise money for Sturgis Rally charities.
City leaders say the open container rules will allow rally-goers a chance to enjoy their beverages and remove one of the bigger issues that law enforcement gas faced during past rallies.
“In the past, that’s been one of our leading causes of interactions with the [police department] and so just allow people to a way that they’re able to enjoy that but also just do it as responsibly as possible,” said Daniel Ainslie, Sturgis City Manager.
The resolution stipulates that the open containers can end at any point if any issues come up.
The rally runs from Friday, August 6 to Sunday, August 15.
