RAPID CITY, S.D. — Over a month ago, Operation Sunflower flew 38 dogs, cats, puppies, and kittens from parts of Louisiana that were hit significantly by Hurricane Ida. It was cold and rainy, but every animal was brought safely to animal shelters in the surrounding area.
On October 17, 33 animals were flown in, all looking for homes as well as part of Operation Harvest Moon. They landed before 1:30 Mountain Time Sunday afternoon, where volunteers helped unload each crate and into vehicles for transport to local shelters.
Shelters from Rapid City, Spearfish, and Hot Springs had their vehicles lined up and ready for loading carriers.
At these places they will be processed and cared for as they wait for adoption.
“The animals that came in with Operation: Sunflower have gone to new homes,” Coordinator Jamie al-Haj recalled. “Everyone was amazed at the response of our communities ion giving these animals new homes, and so we’re hoping that there will be the same type of response.”
The flight was organized by Good Flights, a combination of Hill’s Pet Nutrition and Greater Good Charities. The organization was also responsible for bringing in the animals from Operation Sunflower.
