CUSTER COUNTY, S.D. — Crazy Horse – a symbol honoring all those who fought for freedom but never came home.
A special event was held last week – the unveiling of a POW/MIA National Chair of Honor. The one empty seat is now on display in the Native American Educational and Cultural Center at Crazy Horse Memorial. The chair of honor is a national program of “Rolling Thunder” – a nonprofit focused on prisoner of war and missing in action issues.
With 95 chapters nationwide, the Rolling Thunder has the motto “We will never forget” – and the POW/MIA chairs remain empty – symbolizing the family member still missing in action.
“They don’t have their loved one who’s missing in action home with them to sit in that chair,” said Terry de Rouchey, vice president of Crazy Horse visitor services. “So, we want to remember them and that chair will always remind us of the sacrifice of those who served.”
National POW/MIA Day is September 18, designed to remember the more than 81 thousand Americans still missing in action.
