RAPID CITY, S.D. — This Sunday evening, the century-old Rapid City Municipal Band will provide free, pre-fireworks concert at the Memorial Park Band Shell that will pair with the fireworks to make for a great holiday. The concert, under the direction of Bill Evans, will begin at 8 p.m. and end approximately 9:15 p.m., just minutes ahead of the City’s annual fireworks show.
“The band members are looking forward to playing some very popular patriotic songs and getting everyone pumped up and ready for the great fireworks show,” said Evans. “If you are looking for a great evening of entertainment that includes music and fireworks, you won’t be disappointed.”
The Rapid City group, which currently has 70 members, started a year before the Sioux Falls and Aberdeen Municipal Band groups, making it the oldest municipal band in South Dakota in its 103rd year of performances, initiating performances in 1918 during World War I.
Patriotic sets will include such John Philip Sousa tunes as “Liberty Bell,” “Armed Forces Salute,” and the “US Field Artillery March;” “Shenandoah” by Francis Ticheli; “Trumpeter’s Lullaby” by Leroy Anderson; “American Salute” by Morton Gould; and “Chester” by William Schuman. The concert will conclude with the Municipal Band’s rousing rendition of Sousa’s “Stars and Stripes Forever.”
Please bring a blanket or a lawn chair to enjoy the concert and the fireworks show.
