UPDATE (6/4/21 @ 5 P.M.): Rapid City Parks and Recreation officials report credit card issues have been resolved at the Horace Mann and Jimmy Hilton Sioux Park pools. Officials are still working on credit card machine issues at the Parkview pool and patrons are advised to continue using cash for admission and concessions at the Parkview pool until further notice.
RAPID CITY, S.D. — Talk about perfect timing! Friday was the first scorcher of the season and opening day for Rapid City pools.
Dozens of Rapid Citians lined up at Sioux Park’s Jimmy Hilton Pool looking to beat Friday’s hot temps. The day was extra special – being the first time the public could return to the outdoor pools since the summer of 2019.
With the down time in-between, a few problems are to be expected…as we reported Thursday, the City’s outdoor pools are cash-only as they look to resolve an issue with their credit card system.
However, it could have been much worse. Early on, the City’s Aquatic Division was having trouble filling lifeguard positions and was facing the possibility of not opening some pools.
“I worked really really hard the last month and a half to hold a bunch of lifeguard trainings. It feels good .. It was a very stressful situation to be in because I didn’t want to not open a pool or have restricted hours or anything like that. So, it feels good to be open as normal,” said Emily Carstensen, Recreation Specialist with Rapid City Aquatics.
All Rapid City pools are open daily during the season from noon to 6 p.m.
Rapid City Aquatics also offers swim lessons and day passes good at the city pools.
