RAPID CITY, S.D. — The Sampson’s dining room table is covered in their son Bodey’s Crayola creations.
Hours have been spent designing these mini art pieces.
Kristin, his mom, is a crafter herself, making jewelry under the name The Betty Jo Co., in Rapid City.
While at a craft fair with Kristin, Bodey decided he wanted in on the business venture and thought of making melted crayon designs, saying, “I thought I could make my own business to like just melt crayons and sell them since they turned into like rings.”
He began making rings and is now expanding to making custom built names and shapes that can be a usable coloring utensil or just for décor. He also makes holiday-themed shapes, like hearts or letters to spell out names.
He’s got the production process down to a tee, which he does under adult supervision.
Bodey says, “You take the paper off with a knife, break them up with a knife, put them in the molds, and put them in the over for 12 minutes, and cool them by putting them outside.”
His favorite part of the process? “Watching them melt and how pretty they are.”
For Kristin, crafting and selling along her son is priceless, saying, “Honestly anytime he wants to do anything creatively, I fully support it. Anytime he can learn life lessons or stuff he can carry through with him and sneaking in the math and the spelling and then of course learning…all the kinds of things that go into a business.”
He has decided on “Bodey’s Melting House” for his business name and has immediate plans for some of his revenue. “Buy Legos!”
His mom assures that most of the money will go into his savings account.
Bodey is selling his creations all over the United States and has some solid advice for other kids who want to break into business, “You can do anything you put your mind to.”
