RAPID CITY, S.D. — With one out of every nine in people in South Dakota experiencing food insecurity, some people are taking a stand on a neighborhood-level.
The Little Free Pantry concept began in Fayetteville, Arkansas back in early 2016. It started as a way to raise awareness of food insecurity while also helping meet food needs in the neighborhood.
Rapid City has several: on Brentwood Street, started by Jennifer Reasor; another at the church across from West Middle School; and even a fridge available 24/7 at Hippie Haven downtown.
Reasor says the pantry on Brentwood has been running for four or five years now.
“We have been so blessed to see both the givers and the receivers with smiles on their faces when visiting the pantry,” Reasor wrote in a statement. “The need is beyond great and any and all donations are accepted any time of the day, night, and year.”
There’s also one on Indiana Street in front of Open Heart United Methodist Church.
“Christmas is all about remembering who is the most generous and who else should we be serving,” says Pastor Michele Slott. “It’s not about us…it’s not our birthday!”
If you’re in the spirit of giving this holiday season (or anytime, really!), non-perishable food items, personal care items, clothes, and really anything someone might need can be dropped off in any of the locations across town.
