Rapid Valley holds Halloween “Truck-or-Treat”

RAPID VALLEY, S.D. — Rapid Valley Volunteer Fire Department held Truck-or-Treat at their station Sunday afternoon, a fun and safe alternative to traditional trick-or-treating.

There were games inside the department, followed by a spook house in a garage out back. Fire trucks and state trooper vehicles parked in front of the station, and were staffed with firefighters and officers, who handed out candy to excited truck-or-treaters.

This provided an opportunity for the community, and especially its younger members, to get to know their local first responders in a safe and happy environment.

Joe Tjaden, Captain of Rapid Valley Volunteer Fire Department, talked about the importance of providing a safe environment on Halloween.

“We’re out of traffic, we’re in the daylight, there’s that element of safety that gets added to this that helps out,” he says. “And it makes it a little more comfortable situation for anybody to come and meet.”

The indoor and outdoor combination setup also helped protect kids and parents from the cold weather.  Truck-or-Treat bags that were provided were also equipped with fire prevention information in an effort to help keep families safe this winter.
