RAPID CITY, S.D. —There’s nothing better than people helping other people in need. That’s where the RCAS Regifting Store store comes into the picture.
The store opened in February of 2019 as a way to provide free clothing, books and much more for the community and those in need.
It’s open by appointment only and Jeanne Burckhard-Mckenna, the organizer of the store says that there is always a time to help someone, but none more important than right now, especially due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“I think it’s more important than ever because we have seen some of our family members laid off from work due to COVID,” said Burckhard-McKenna, who’s also the Whole Child Coordinator at RCAS. “Not only from maybe being quarantined from the family, there are some jobs where people have been laid off because they’ve been quarantined and you know, just different situations like that.”
Everything in the store is free and there are no income requirements to be able to shop. Shoppers can reserve 30 minute appointments to get what they need from the store by calling 801-231-3998.
At one time, Burckhard-Mckenna and her husband even started stores like the RCAS Regifting Store on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation and Rosebud Indian Reservation to help with needs on the reservations.
The store is mainly taking toy donations for children as Christmas gets closer. Donations of kids clothes are also welcomed at this time.
The event is a collaborative effort between the Rapid City Area School District and Black Hills Special Services Cooperative.
