RAPID CITY, S.D. — Rural America Initiatives receives $18,000 from local nonprofits to go toward mentoring programs amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
To make sure students are getting homework done and that mentors remain in contact while social distancing, RAI has purchased 20 internet-capable devices to be checked out by students when they need it.
Hopes are to purchase more by applying for additional grants.
Whitney Recountre, Ateyapi Tier 1 Coordinator, said “With the funding we’re provided and as we continue to search for more ways to collaborate, we are able to give encouragement and check in with the students.”
RAI works with 1,200 kids throughout the calendar year, providing early education and mentoring for Native American students in the Rapid City area.
The award is thanks to Black Hills Area Community Foundation, the John T. Vucurevich Foundation, and United Way of the Black Hills.
