RAPID CITY, S.D. — The Salvation Army of the Black Hills was helping to make the holidays brighter on Monday.
The organization hosted a food and toy distribution at the old “Family Thrift” location in Rapid City.
Each food box includes all the ‘fixin’s’ for a holiday meal along with cereal, peanut butter, and jelly for the children who are learning from home. The food and toys will continue to be handed out to pre-registered families on Tuesday.
“Christmas is one of our favorite seasons and the reason is because we can spread so much hope and joy through a simple thing like a food box and turkey, and it’s even more important this year; we’ve already had so many people tell us that they’re relying on this for their Christmas dinner,” said Kelsie Moreno, the Director of Special Services for the Salvation Army of the Black Hills. “This may be all that they have this year.”
Moreno says that the Salvation Army will have distributed a total of about 1,800 food boxes from all of its locations (including Spearfish, Sturgis, and Pine Ridge) by Tuesday. She also said that the food is made possible by the donations that the Salvation Army receives through the red kettles.
Over 2,500 kids were provided toys for the holidays. Distribution started Monday and will end on Tuesday. Kids were given hats, gloves, stocking stuffers, and one main gift.
When people registered, they were given a specific pickup time frame to be able to come pick up their food and toys.
Those who received toys were registered through the Angel Tree Program.
