LEAD, S.D. — The Sanford Underground Research Facility is inviting the public to a virtual dedication and naming of the Yates Ramp in honor of William “Jack” Stratton on November 19, 2020 at 3 p.m. MST.
Stratton spent more than 40 years working in the Homestake Gold Mine and Sanford Lab before passing away in May 2019. During his time with the facility, Stratton served in many roles, including as the Yates Shaft Foreman, where he supervised operations and maintenance for more than a decade.
“Jack Stratton led the South Dakota Science and Technology Authority’s efforts to provide reliable underground access for our world-leading science experiments through the mile-deep Yates Shaft,” said Executive Director at Sanford Lab Mike Headley.
Stratton is survived by a family of five children, 12 grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren, as well as his Sanford Lab family. His strong leadership and tremendous sense of humor left a lasting mark on the people in his life.
“Jack was a dear friend to everyone at Sanford Lab and embodied our core values of safety first, care for others, professionalism, and being a team player,” Headley said. “We’re incredibly honored for the opportunity to recognize Jack’s life and his dedication to the Sanford Lab family through the Stratton Station Dedication.”
The celebration of life will include the revealing of the “Stratton Station” memorial plaque, which will be mounted at the Yates Ramp. Family members, former coworkers, and friends will speak.
