CHEYENNE, WY – The month of July was very busy for professional cowboys and cowgirls.
Throughout the month, champions were crowned across the country and a few contestants moved way up in the standings including Sawyer Gilbert from Buffalo, South Dakota.
Gilbert won the breakaway roping title on Sunday, Aug. 1 at Cheyenne Frontier Days.
The 19-year-old completed the throw in 4.4 seconds to grab the win in her first time participating in Cheyenne Frontier Days.
Gilbert won $12,175 in the finals and earned a total of $17,525 at the Daddy of ’em All.
Before competing in Cheyenne, Gilbert was 19th in the world standings in breakaway roping.
But now she’s moved up to third place overall in the standings.
“Let’s talk about your run for just a moment here because we know you’re very capable in a small setup,” said CFD rodeo announcer Kyle Shobe. “Being very fast. What adjustments does somebody have to make coming in to the entirely different setup that is Cheyenne?”
“You know, I really didn’t think about it a whole lot,” said Sawyer Gilbert. “I’ve always watched Cheyenne and so I knew it was going to be a long start. I was riding my mare and I was super excited because that’s kind of her setup. But then after the run in slack, she got hurt. My brother, Grey Gilbert, was lucky enough to let me use his horse and I was like this is even better.”
