PIERRE, S.D. — Observed December 5 thru 11, National Influenza Vaccination Week aims to raise awareness regarding the importance of receiving a yearly flu vaccination.
The flu is a viral infection spread through respiratory droplets when coughing or sneezing. Fever, cough, sore throat, and headache are common symptoms.
Officials with the South Dakota Department of Health says they’re inviting all residents eight months and older to get their flu vaccine this week. Anyone not already vaccinated for COVID-19 can receive that shot as well at the same time.
“We want all South Dakotans strong and healthy during the holidays and beyond. Give yourself and your loved ones peace of mind by getting your flu and COVID-19 vaccine,” said Secretary of Health Kim Malsam-Rysdon.
On average, 39 South Dakotans die following influenza infections each year. Pregnant women, children under five, people over 65, and anyone with chronic medical conditions are at an increased risk of potentially deadly flu-related complications.
The DoH says hand-washing, covering nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing, not touching your face, and staying home when sick can all help prevent the spread of influenza.
