SD GFP encourages registration for winter depredation hunts

PIERRE, S.D. — With winter fast approaching, South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks would like to remind resident hunters to register for potential depredation hunts later in the season.

GFP’s Wildlife Damage Management Program assists landowners with wildlife depredation abatement programs and services. When these methods are ineffective, hunters may be utilized to help reduce the damage caused by wildlife. Depredation hunts can occur anytime between December and March.

South Dakota residents can register free of charge for these potential depredation hunts for elk, deer, antelope, and turkey. Once registered, hunters are put into a random drawing to determine eligibility once a depredation hunt is authorized.

With the exception of hunters registering for elk, all other hunters are encouraged to register for counties near their home or within close driving distance. Hunters can register in a maximum of 10 counties for any species other than elk. These depredation hunts are often time-sensitive, and winter weather can sometimes make travel difficult for those participating. In order to be successful, GFP needs hunters to be available at the location almost immediately.

Winter depredation hunts typically focus on assisting landowners with wildlife damage, but can also provide hunters with another opportunity after traditional hunting seasons close.
