RAPID CITY — Students from the School of Mines recognized MLK Day by lending a hand to Feeding South Dakota.
This is the 11th year the students have stepped-up to help the organization and local food pantry. They use the holiday as a day on – not day off – to use the the time to serve others.
They set-up at several grocery stores, such as the Mount Rushmore Road Safeway, to collect non-perishable food items and cash donations.
The students were eager for the opportunity to help, especially given the toll the pandemic has taken on food banks.
“People are struggling more than usual right now and things have gone on longer than we thought they would, so we can’t let people forget that there’s others still out there struggling. So having an event like this will kind of plant the seed in people’s minds to start helping out more than they usually would,” said Claudianne Moisset, SDSM&T Circle K.
Last year’s food drive brought in more than 3,500 pounds of food for Feeding South Dakota, and well over $1,000 in donations.
