Silent vigil, 200 flags at Memorial Pond aims to remember South Dakota’s COVID-19 victims

RAPID CITY, S.D. — It a was time to remember South Dakota’s Covid-19 victims.

The idea stemmed from a reflection pool memorial that honored the nation’s COVID victims – seen by Rapid City Councilman Ritchie Nordstrom.

“I decided to go with South Dakota flags and place them by the Memorial Pond,” Nordstrum said.

200 flags used for a silent vigil at Memorial Park right next to The Monument in Rapid City, each representing roughly 11 people in the state who lost their lives.

Although it’s not a city event, Nordstrom says it’s his small way of paying his respects. The flags are directly in front of bench that overlooks the pond.

This was planned, as it’s where he hopes that people will sit and reflect on time with their loved ones.

“Some people could not have that personal time when they knew loved one was passing, so this is one way to help them deal with that grief,” Nordstrum said.

Many have been lost.

“It’s 2,000 people who are not with their families this holiday or any other day of the year,” said Mark Mickley, a retired RN for Monument Health.

But Mickley, who helped serve the caregivers on the front-lines during the pandemic, says it also serves a reminder for the community.

“Not only do we focus on the loss but the takeaway is that public health is very important,” Mickley said. “It’s not just about us. It’s about our community.”

The flags will stand through Monday, July 5 for those who have someone to remember.
