RAPID CITY, S.D. — This week marked the start of horse cutting ahead of the Black Hills Stock Show, and participation has never been better.
The cutting competition is an opportunity for a rider and horse to show off their team skills and demonstrate the horses athleticism. And this week the South Dakota Cutting Horse Association is in town for the Black Hills Stock Show, with a goal of promoting cutting.
With rodeos and stock shows around the country having been canceled, this year’s competition has been a hit.
“Over 140 entries, which is way up from last year, which is up about a third increase over a year ago, and the last couple of years,” said Jason Reed.
Reed attributes high participation to the quality of the Stock Show and personalized development. There are several cutters from the state who have gone on to cut both nationally and internationally.
“South Dakota Cutting Horse Association is growing tremendously, and our door is wide open. We’re reaching out to new members, and we would enjoy having anyone that is interested at all to come join us,” Reed added.
Wednesday was the last day of cutting for the Association, the rest of the Stock Show events start a week from Friday on the January 29th.
