BOX ELDER, S.D. — A big win for Box Elder and Ellsworth Air Force Base, courtesy of the South Dakota House – the Liberty Center gets the legislative green light.
The House late today approving an amended bill to fund the facility, which will serve as the primary physical training facility for the base, and will also be available to the entire Box Elder community.
The House had defeated the original proposal – the Senate amended it and passed it – and now the House has approved it as well by a vote of 61-to-six.
From here it goes to Governor Kristi Noem’s desk for a signature, which is expected.
Scott Landguth, Executive Director of the Ellsworth Development Authority, hopes she’ll sign it soon, because they’re ready to get to work.
“If everything goes according to schedule here in the next week or so, we should be breaking ground in the month of April, early May based on the weather, and the overall goal has always been to have the facility up and running in May of ’22,” Landguth said.
District 35 State Senator Jessica Castleberry – who represents Box Elder – says with so many other infrastructure requests defeated, this is a win for Ellsworth and Box Elder.
