PIERRE, S.D. — Some South Dakota lawmakers aren’t saying goodbye for the summer time.
They’ll be partaking in summer time research, looking to handle points in the state earlier than the subsequent legislative session.
15 lawmakers from the SD House and Senate will look at jail and state prison techniques, property taxes and juvenile justice throughout the summer time.
District-30 State Representative Trish Ladner is the chair for the property tax summer time research.
“We wish to meet with (the) division of income, training, municipalities and get a great basis of what’s already right here after which go and discover fashions which may work to assist to maintain folks on fastened incomes and all of us in our houses and preserve the South Dakota lifestyle,” Ladner stated.
State Senator Helene Duhamel serves on the regional jail and state prison techniques committees that can have some overlap.
She says that it will likely be essential for lawmakers to look at the state’s prison techniques, each from a piece launch perspective and ensuring counties and cities can have efficient jails.
“A 3rd of the inmates are from Pennington or Meade county, and so it is sensible to maintain them right here,” Duhamel stated. “You know, getting (them) into that work launch program the place they’ll get a job right here and hold a job right here ’trigger they’re from right here.”
