Tammy Even-Cordell, first-time director of the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, is excited to be fulfilling a new role on the rally team. Even-Cordell has helped with the rally in the past, so she knows directing the event is no small task.
“I’m excited for everything,” said Even-Cordell. “This area— It’s going to be a challenge, but it’s been so much fun getting everything together, learning all the the back stuff that as a helper before, I didn’t know.”
Even-Cordell is looking forward to welcoming a large crowd this year, especially because international travel is now more accessible after the pandemic subsided.
“I think this year is going to be great with them opening the borders,” said Even-Cordell. “We’re going to have a lot of international travel through, as well as, of course, our nationwide travelers. I think it’ll be great.”
The Sturgis Rally is a big deal for South Dakota, not only for its festivities, but also for its economical benefits.
“It’s a great economic booster, not just for our city, but across the state,” said Even-Cordell. “I mean, it affects Sioux Falls as well as Rapid City, on over into Wyoming as well. It’s just a challenge as far as the city, because we are a city of 7,000 people to accommodate the thousands that come.”
Although the rally attracts many tourists from all over the world, Sturgis locals are just as much a part of the events as the visitors who travel hundreds of miles for the festivities.
“My goals are to make this the funnest year for all of our visitors to come, as well as our locals,” said Even-Cordell. “I don’t want any of our locals left out, I want them to enjoy all of the the new stunt rides that we’re doing. There’s bands all over Rally Point all week long, we have a lot of new activities with bike shows. I think it’s going to be a lot of fun for locals and our visitors.”
New events are planned for this year’s rally, including stunt shows.
“The new things are we’re having stunt shows downtown on Harley-Davidson way,” said Even-Cordell. “That will be after the opening ceremonies on Friday, and one on Monday afternoon. We also have a bike show on Sunday on Sixth Street—JP Cycles is sponsoring that with some other people.”
Even-Cordell recommends that all visitors make lodging arrangements before they arrive, as hotels and campgrounds typically have no vacancies during the rally.
