Starting on Nov. 4 and lasting until Nov 13, Black Hills Community Theater will be performing “Shrek: The Musical”, a Broadway musical based off of the cartoon movie.
With the story taking place in a fantasy setting, one of the challenges the crew faces is interpreting animated characters with real people. Libby Williams, the Black Hills Community Theater Costumer Designer for “Shrek: The Musical”, says they have to find ways to make that challenge become a reality, a process that she also says is fun.
“So we have 96 different costumes in this show,” Libby said. “My assistant costume designer is actually my daughter, Judy Williams. And then we have a crew of a total of 12 people coming in to do everything from cutting, sewing. A lot of crafting goes into things like, you know, some of the costumes.”
A lot of costumes mean a lot of tasks, and Libby adds that people have been “busy, busy, busy trying to get it all done.”
Some of the costumes that need to be made include ogres, lots of fairy tale creatures and even a dragon.
“Oh, that’s really exciting. Challenging, but fun,” said Libby.
The show opens the first weekend of November and runs for two weekends on Friday and Saturday nights, and a Sunday matinee.
Tickets are on sale at the box office and you get to pick your seat.
