RAPID CITY, S.D. — For people facing food insecurity, Feeding South Dakota is a priceless resource.
The organization helps South Dakotans in need in all 66 counties in the state.
Every week, Feeding South Dakota provides food to approximately 21,000 individuals.
Lori Dykstra is the relief organization’s new chief executive officer.
She was in Rapid City on Thursday to meet with staff and volunteers here.
Dykstra says the pandemic forced Feeding South Dakota to rethink how it fulfills its mission.
“Well, Feeding South Dakota really pivoted last year and decided to go back out to where hunger is rather than hunger trying to find us,” she said. “So we had to close down our pantries and our locations. But we did mobile pantries and were able to expand across the state and get into every community.”
Dykstra says one in nine South Dakotans face food insecurity, and one in six children in the state don’t where or when they’ll get their next meal.
