LEAD, S.D. — Terry Peak Ski Area had to push back their opening weekend because of the nice weather and now plan to have a soft opening this weekend – that is, if they can make some snow.
Temperatures of 28 degrees or less are optimal for making snow.
The staff have been making snow at night in order to get ready for opening the slopes.
As of Tuesday, Stewart Slope is close to being ready to open and they are hoping to get Surprise Slope ready this week for the weekend.
Linda Derosier, Terry Peak Marketing Director, says, “At this point in time it’s hard to say, but we want to have more terrain open; we don’t want to have everybody on just one small slope, like our Stewart Slope. The ability to be able to spread people out is really important this season.”
In precaution, they are recommending that patrons wear masks while in the buildings and lift lines and do not bring in coolers or gear bags.
Derosier says that its best to check the Terry Peak website or call before heading up to the mountain.
Derosier adds, “It’s kind of a natural special distancing – skiing and snowboarding is – being out on the slopes we hope that people are farther than six feet apart when they are going down the hill, so I mean we feel like we are going to have a really good season. I think people are anxious to get out and have some fun in the snow. “
Ski school will be available and the restaurant and bar will be open as well.
