Sue Crossman, Exercise Coordinator for the City of Rapid City explains how the AARP sponsored Fit Lot workout place came to Rapid City.
“It’s the AARP sponsored fit lot. So it was a grant that was, that the city actually applied for and won. And so that they only put one in every state. And so South Dakota’s fit lot is here in Rapid City. Actually, it’s a circuit training. It’s a community fit lot. So it’s free to the community. There’s no charge for people to come join our Fit Lot classes and so will organize and set up a series of classes and drop in classes and people can just come join us and get a good workout.”
The AARP saw a need for fits lots because of how important exercise is especially as we age into our senior years.
Crossman continues, “We can modify any of the exercises depending on people’s athletic ability. So we actually have certified personal trainers and certified group instructors, and we’re actually looking for a couple more that will come work with us next year. But so, we come and we set up the fit lot and then we’re able to also go around and help modify, form and stuff for them.”
The Fit Lot offers classes but there is also an opportunity for you to use some of the equipment on your own time. The community Fit Lot has the same hours as the city parks.
Crossman stresses, “Exercise is important. If you don’t move, then pretty soon you can’t move. And also, it’s important to get out there and keep your muscles strong. Impact is really good for your bone health and just all around exercising and just moving is great for the community so that you can go out and do the things you want to do.”
