Major Jo Langham, a Territory Veteran Service Director with the Salvation Army, explains the Salvation Army’s role within the VA.
“Well, one of the things that I do is coordinate all of the VA homeless grants that we get from Washington D.C. We can do families, singles, beds for the night, beds for longer. And the contract goes through there. They do not actually have the money here in Rapid City, but all they have to do is call the divisional headquarters in Omaha, who does have money from these various contracts. We get about $8 million across the whole of our central territory. And it’s really just to get veterans off the street, help them get into supportive housing so that we can help the men and women who have served us and given us freedom-help them to start again.”
The Salvation Army also works with Supportive Services for Veterans and their Families (SSVF) and also with Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing (VASH).
Major Langham continues, “I also organize manage all of the VA hospital visitation, which is called SSBF in the whole central territory of which here we serve two hospitals. And we will go in and do programs, give out items, whatever they need at those hospitals.”
If you know a veteran that is homeless, please contact the local Salvation Army so they can help.
