The Meltdown Rolled Ice Cream Truck offers made-to-order rolled ice cream treats in Rapid City.
Nate Forsyth, owner of The Meltdown, explained the process of crafting rolled ice cream.
“All of our orders start out as a liquid, and we put it onto our cold plate, which gets down to a -30 degrees. And we chop in our toppings as we go, and it freezes, and then we spread it out nice and thin. And then we literally roll it off the plate, and you get these adorable little rolls,” said Forsyth.
Rolling unique ice cream and toppings combinations for each order enables The Meltdown to serve the freshest possible ice cream flavors with the freshest possible ingredients. Forsyth explained that rolling the ingredients into the freezing cream flavors the ice cream as opposed to covering it in toppings.
Forsyth started The Meltdown Ice Cream Truck after noticing a need in the ever-growing food truck scene in Rapid City.
“There’s not a lot of dessert options in the food truck world in Rapid City, and the food trucks keep growing and growing. So we wanted to offer something to eat after dinner,” said Forsyth.
The truck itself was a bit of a family DIY project for the Forsyths. After purchasing the trailer, Forsyth’s father set up all the electrical, plumbing, lights and equipment necessary for the ice cream truck.
The Meltdown offers both classic and innovative flavor combinations, so there’s something for everyone.
“So probably our most popular one would be the cookies and cream, which is chopped up Oreos, and then a close second would be strawberry cheesecake, which is fresh strawberries and cheesecake. And we also offer some cereal options, so Fruity Pebbles or Cinnamon Toast Crunch, s’mores, chocolate brownie, if you like chocolate,” said Forsyth.
According to Forsyth, The Meltdown truck visits Founders Park twice a week. The truck is also available to cater parties, weddings and other events in need of sweet treats.
