PIERRE, S.D. — As part of the Her Vote Her Voice Women’s History Project, students in fourth through 12th grades participated in the “Know Her Story” contest.
Students wrote an original essay or created an original piece of art about a South Dakota woman who made an impact. The creative work addresses who the woman is, what she did, what impact this had on those around her, and why we should know her story.
Madelynn Holzer from Summerset won the art contest (10th-12th grade) for her submission honoring Gov. Kristi Noem.
“Kristi Noem is a woman that many look up to. In my art, you see the Agriculture symbol, House of Representatives symbol, the South Dakota Capitol building, the American flag, the South Dakota flag, and the South Dakota Right to Life Symbol,” Madelynn said. “These are all things Governor Noem loves and stands up for.”
Riley Hadorn of Rapid City won the art contest (7th-9th grade) for his submission honoring his grandmother, science teacher Mary Jensen.
Riley said, “She got her degree in chemistry back in the 1970s, faced sexism, and stood up to it. She believed that women can do and be anything.”
