RAPID CITY, S.D. — Cattle sales at the Black Hills Stock Show and Rodeo continue as the week goes on.
The Charolais sale at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center brought the question of which species of beef bring the best results.
Turns out, a mixture of breeds can help bring the most for ranchers in terms of balance in the amount of meat and fat in an animal.
“Crossing like an Angus Cow with a Charolais Bull has always been a very popular way to go,” said Matt Odden, of Odden Ranch Company. “You get some heterosis, some extra performance, and kind of maximizing all the best of the traits from both breeds.
Odden also said that by breeding the two different species, it can bring out the best in terms of a higher yield or meat and muscle combination in an animal.
