Tucked away in the heart of the Black Hills is the Bavarian Inn, a nine-acre resort featuring 64 rooms, two swimming pools, a hot tub, a pickleball court and so much more.
Marcel Wahlstrom, the owner of the Bavarian Inn said he takes great pride in the maintenance of the Bavarian’s beautiful grounds.
“We plant about 2000 petunias every season. We just try and make this place completely come alive,” said Wahlstrom. “And then we’ve got all sorts of game areas, just fun things for families to do like life-size connect 4 and big chess sets around the property. So every corner kind of has a little hidden gem that you can go and find.”
The Bavarian Inn is also home to a quarter-mile fitness loop which is the perfect trail for dog walkers and lovers of nature.
Also located at the resort is the Feel Good Café, which attracts tourists and locals alike with its menu and scenic views.
“So the café, it’s an oversized eatery that’s about 5000 square feet, has two decks on it, plenty of space on the indoors for everyone to have plenty of room,” said Wahlstrom. “We do our own croissants, you know, we do everything as close to from scratch as we can.”
The Feel Good Café’s menu features simple, healthy foods that are easy to grab for on-the-go visitors. And, of course, the café provides fresh coffee to create the perfect morning in the Black Hills.
The Bavarian was built in the early 1970’s and was owned by a German family for over 40 years. When the Wahlstroms purchased the resort, they introduced Alpine influences and modernized the inn, making it the prime vacation and staycation location it is today.
“We sit on the top of Custer, so we’re about 700 feet above downtown,” said Wahlstrom. “We’re at about 5800 feet here. Really quite nice. No bugs, no mosquitoes, nothing like that.”
Wahlstrom said the inn hosts visitors from Rapid City and other areas of the Black Hills, as well as tourists from surrounding states such as Wyoming.
“We have just such a unique, family friendly environment that it’s a perfect way to just get away for a couple of days,” said Wahlstrom.
