RAPID CITY, S.D. — To help with the trucker shortage in South Dakota, Western Dakota Tech has put nearly a dozen drivers through its Professional Truck Driving Program.
The South Dakota Department of Labor says heavy truck and tractor-trailer drivers is number one for job openings.
The average starting salary is over $46,000.
WDT’s program gets calls regularly from local carriers who are trying to stay fully staffed during the pandemic.
“I deal with a lot of companies in town and they all need drivers so bad immediately,” said Jay Banick, the Trucking Program Director for WDT. “They’re actually having trouble getting commodities to Rapid City, so it’s a real problem.”
WDT’s programs runs for six weeks.
