Young Rembrandts offers art classes to children

With many opting to keep gatherings small and trying to boost holiday spirits at home, parents are looking for ways to keep their children entertained this holiday season.

The Young Rembrandts organization in Rapid City offers virtual and on-demand options as well as in-person classes with COVID precautions in place.

JoHannah Hatley, Owner & Instructor of Young Rembrandts, says, “Its curriculum-based, it’s a step by step process, so as I am up drawing at the board, or one of my teachers, then they are doing the same things – the students are following the direction you are giving. And hopefully by the end of all that instruction, we end up with a really great drawing and then they are so proud of themselves because they didn’t realize they could draw and that’s a very nice thing to see and the smiles on their face.”

Since Christmas break may mean more time at home this year, JoHannah says that crafts are usually a hit with kids, like making slime or snowman ice cream.

Hatley says, “I feel this program is so important to have around here to bring around those things that the kids don’t get to always learn in school – not by the school’s fault at all- but it’s just that art isn’t available as much.”

“It gives you a sense of confidence when you see the pieces you put out, it gets them ready for listening skills they are going to have to have throughout school – art, it encompasses so much,” says Hatley.
